KUALA NERUS: Coastal reinforcement works have begun in Kampung Tanjung, Batu Rakit, with government-appointed contractors building embankments around affected homes.
Mohd Yazit Idris, 66, the owner of a blue bungalow affected by the erosion, said contractors had been working behind his house over the past few days.
"Work is being done behind my house and also along the Kampung Tanjung coastline, which was eroded by the Northeast Monsoon that hit late last year," he said.
Mohd Yazit said the contractors were using a combination of boulders and hill soil to strengthen the area. "They're using boulders and soil to build the embankment around the house," he said.
"Before this, every time there was a high tide, it caused concern because part of the house's structure had already been damaged by erosion."
The homeowner added that the construction of the embankment had given him some peace of mind.
"I can finally sleep better at night, knowing something is being done to reduce the threat," he said.
Mohd Yazit said that he hoped the new embankment would hold up as the monsoon season approaches.
"With less than six months to go before the Northeast Monsoon returns, bringing strong winds and high waves, this boulder barrier should help reduce the risk of damage," he said.
