THE DrainĀage and IrrigĀaĀtion DepartĀment (DID) said Kelantan is expecĀted to be affected by another round of floods startĀing today.

This folĀlows the issuĀance of a conĀtinuĀous rain warnĀing by the MalayĀsian MetĀeorĀoĀloĀgical DepartĀment (MetĀMalayĀsia) yesĀterĀday.

DID’s National Flood ForeĀcastĀing and WarnĀing Centre said floods were likely to occur from today to Thursday in 10 disĀtricts, with river basins.

They are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Bachok, Machang, Kota Baru, Pasir Puteh, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang, where the SunĀgai Kelantan, SunĀgai Golok, SunĀgai SemĀerak, SunĀgai Kemasin, SunĀgai Lebir, SunĀgai Galas and SunĀgai NengĀgiri basins are locĀated, respectĀively.

Labuan JKR carĀries out flood mitĀigĀaĀtion after heavy rains

LABUAN: A flood mitĀigĀaĀtion proĀgramme was carĀried out by the Labuan PubĀlic Works DepartĀment (JKR) folĀlowĀing conĀtinuĀous heavy rain and high tides at sevĀeral vilĀlages and resĀidĀenĀtial areas.

Its dirĀector, Mohd Faizul Ali Hanapiah, said the iniĀtiĀatĀive was part of the departĀment’s corĀporĀate social responsĀibĀilĀity (CSR) efforts carĀried out in sevĀeral parts of the island.

The flood mitĀigĀaĀtion proĀgramme was iniĀtiĀated folĀlowĀing reports of floodĀing in mulĀtiple locĀaĀtions, promptĀing the departĀment to identify and priĀorĀitĀise the most affected areas for immeĀdiĀate interĀvenĀtion.

ā€œDurĀing this curĀrent rainy seaĀson, comĀbined with high tides, a numĀber of vilĀlages and housĀing areas were affected.

ā€œAs part of our CSR, JKR perĀsonĀnel went down to the ground to assess the situĀation and impleĀment mitĀigĀaĀtion measĀures where assistĀance is most urgently needed,ā€ he told Bernama yesĀterĀday.

Mohd Faizul said 10 techĀnical perĀsonĀnel from the departĀment were mobilĀised for the purĀpose.

He added that the efforts were supĀporĀted by machinery and equipĀment to carry out drainĀage clearĀing, desiltĀing works and minor earthĀworks to improve water flow while reduĀcing the risk of proĀlonged floodĀing.

The CSR activĀitĀies were focused on Kg SunĀgai Labu’s beachĀfront, which was one of the areas idenĀtiĀfied as vulĀnerĀable due to its low-lying locĀaĀtion and exposĀure to tidal influĀence durĀing periĀods of intense rainĀfall, he added.

Mohd Faizul said that the iniĀtiĀatĀive reflects the departĀment’s comĀmitĀment not only to infraĀstrucĀture develĀopĀment but also to comĀmunity well-being, parĀticĀuĀlarly in assistĀing resĀidĀents durĀing chalĀlenĀging weather conĀdiĀtions.

ā€œJKR will conĀtinue to monĀitor the situĀation and work closely with relĀevĀant agenĀcies and local comĀmunitĀies to ensure mitĀigĀaĀtion efforts are carĀried out effiĀciently, espeĀcially durĀing the peak of the monĀsoon period,ā€ he said.

ResĀidĀents in affected areas were advised to remain vigilĀant and to report drainĀage or flooĀdreĀlated issues to the authorĀitĀies.

Sabah vilĀlage hit by worst flood in 50 years

KOTA KINABALU: ResĀidĀents of KamĀpung RamĀpayan Laut in Sabah are grapĀpling with the afterĀmath of the worst flood in over 50 years.

IncessĀant rain on SatĀurday evenĀing caused floodĀwaĀters to rise rapĀidly in the vilĀlage, catchĀing many resĀidĀents off guard and leavĀing many homes subĀmerged in waist-high water.

JaliĀnah Md Jali, 62, said many vilĀlaĀgers were unable to save their belongĀings, unlike in preĀviĀous floodĀing incidĀents.Ā ā€œDurĀing norĀmal floods, the water would usuĀally remain outĀside and did not enter the house.

ā€œThis is because the water has to overĀcome the front door barĀrier,ā€ she told Bernama while cleanĀing mud and removĀing water from her livĀing room.

ā€œOn SatĀurday, the water reached waist height,ā€ JaliĀnah added.Ā She did not have time to save her valuĀables and her furĀnitureĀ and elecĀtrical items were damĀaged.

ā€œIniĀtially, everyĀone thought it would be just a norĀmal flood as the water level was low.Ā ā€œBut the floodĀwaĀters rose very fast. I am very sad because I have lived here for over 60 years and have never seen a flood this severe,ā€ she added.

JaliĀnah lamenĀted that KamĀpung RamĀpayan Laut is now betĀter known for freĀquent floodĀing than for develĀopĀment.

She said she hoped that local repĀresĀentĀatĀives and relĀevĀant agenĀcies would find long-term soluĀtions to floodĀing.

Another vicĀtim, Jali Jawi, 52, said the floodĀwaĀters came into the vilĀlage from two difĀferĀentĀ sources simĀulĀtanĀeously.

ā€œThe flood was bigĀger and worse than before. The water came not just from the land butĀ also from the sea,ā€ he said.

He added that water began rising around 5.30pm and only receded early yesĀterĀday mornĀing.

A check by Bernama revealed that floodĀwaĀters had receded to ankle level, with most of the area still covered in thick mud, makĀing cleanĀing difĀfiĀcult.

DamĀaged furĀniture and houseĀhold items carĀried away by the flood were scattered in front of sevĀeral houses, while resĀidĀents were busy removĀing mud from their homes and dryĀing salvaged items.

AccordĀing to the Sabah State DisĀaster ManĀageĀment ComĀmitĀtee, the numĀber of flood vicĀtims rose from 282 on SatĀurday to 495 yesĀterĀday mornĀing.Ā The vicĀtims are curĀrently sheltered at two relief centres.

In Kota KinĀabalu, 180 vicĀtims from 46 famĀilĀies are curĀrently housed in a hall at the Al-munir Mosque, while 315 vicĀtims from 113 famĀilĀies in Beaufort are being sheltered at the Selagon EvacĀuĀation Centre.

SMK Matang upgraded to perĀmanĀent disĀaster shelĀter

KUALA BERANG: The disĀaster relief centre at SMK Matang here has been fully upgraded from a temĀporĀary centre to a perĀmanĀent one and is now ready for use, says National DisĀaster ManĀageĀment Agency.

Its dirĀector-genĀeral, Meor Ismail Meor Akim, said the upgradĀing works involved conĀvertĀing an unused hostel block at the school into a perĀmanĀent disĀaster relief centre, carĀried out from July to DecemĀber last year at a cost of about RM907,000.

He said it is the third such centre comĀpleted nationĀwide, folĀlowĀing the comĀpleĀtion of two simĀilar centres in Johor – at Dewan Taman Kota Jaya and Dewan Arena SegitĀiga in Kota Tinggi.

ā€œWe plan to creĀate 15 perĀmanĀent disĀaster relief centres nationĀwide, either through new conĀstrucĀtion or by upgradĀing existĀing temĀporĀary centre facilĀitĀies, and this is the third to be comĀpleted after the two in Johor.

ā€œWe aim to ensure greater comĀfort for flood vicĀtims, and we also hope the centre can be utilĀised outĀside the flood seaĀson so that it does not become a wasted facilĀity,ā€ he told reportĀers after attendĀing the hanĀdover cereĀmony of the relief centre here yesĀterĀday, reporĀted Bernama.

Meor Ismail said the relief centre, which can accomĀmodĀate more than 200 flood vicĀtims at any one time, is equipped with improved facilĀitĀies, includĀing disĀabĀilĀity-friendly toiĀlets.

The centre comĀprises seven rooms and a storĀage area that can serve as a forĀward base for essenĀtial supĀplies and food disĀtriĀbuĀtion durĀing flood emerĀgenĀcies.

MeanĀwhile, he said all relĀevĀant agenĀcies are on full alert in preĀparĀaĀtion for the next phase of the north-east monĀsoon, which is expecĀted to begin today.

ā€œSevĀeral states are curĀrently experĀiĀenĀcing floods, and this is only the middle of the monĀsoon seaĀson. Another surge of heavy rain is foreĀcast, and all agenĀcies have been on standby since the early stages,ā€ he added.
