KOTA KINABALU (Oct 14): The Sabah government has directed schools in areas where Air Pollutant Index (API) readings exceed 150 for three consecutive days to close temporarily.
State Secretary Datuk Zainudin Aman, who is also State Disaster Committee chairman, said the move is to protect school children and teachers from the harmful effects of haze.
“This is also in line with the Education Ministry’s directive following the Royal Advice issued by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim,” he said in a statement.
All schools in Tawau have been directed to close beginning Wednesday (Oct 14) due to worsening haze conditions.
On Tuesday, API readings for the district exceeded 150, which the Department of Environment classifies as unhealthy.
