1,000 displaced by floods in Petaling, Klang districts

SHAH ALAM: More than 1,000 people have been displaced by floods in Petaling and Klang districts after continuous heavy rain, prompting the opening of six temporary relief centres (PPS).

Selangor Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said three PPS had been opened in Petaling district — Kenanga Hall in Section 28 (MBSA), SK Seksyen 16 and Camelia Hall in Putra Heights.

In Klang, three more centres had been activated — SK Sungai Binjai, Azalea Hall in Taman Seri Muda and Bunga Bakawali Hall in Section 35.

"The evacuation, registration and headcount processes are ongoing at all PPS centres. Victims' information will be updated from time to time.

"Our priority is to relocate the victims first. Once the rain subsides and the floods recede, we will coordinate volunteers to assist with the cleaning work.

"There may also be financial assistance (from the state government), but this will only be channelled to those officially registered at the PPS. If they enter the PPS, we will handle the distribution of financial aid for the victims," he said on a visit to an affected area in Kampung Padang Jawa here today.

Commenting on the flood in Kampung Padang Jawa, he said that although no casualties were reported, many families were affected.

"At the state level, we will coordinate the evacuation process and ensure the safety of the residents.

"We hope residents affected by the floods will follow instructions if asked to evacuate, as we want to prevent any loss of life or serious incidents," he said.

He added that the state government was on high alert and preparing for any eventualities should the heavy rains continue.

"If it rains heavily again tonight, further measures will be needed, especially to assist with evacuations," he said.

Heavy rain since 2am today had caused flash floods in several areas of the state, particularly in the districts of Petaling, Klang, Sepang, Hulu Langat and Gombak.

Putra Heights victims to be briefed on rebuilding on Monday

PETALING JAYA:

The Selangor government will brief the victims of the Putra Heights gas pipeline blaze on the rebuilding of their homes on Monday, says menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

He said this will be among the tasks of a recovery committee formed to oversee efforts to rebuild homes and public infrastructure affected by the fire.

He said the panel will also manage the funds and assistance for the victims.

“This morning marked the last meeting of our disaster management committee for the gas pipeline explosion.

“On Monday, residents whose houses were completely and partially destroyed will be briefed on the rental assistance programme and guidelines for the reconstruction and repair of affected houses,” Amirudin said in a statement.

He said the state government will stop its daily press briefings. Instead, these will be held periodically to update the public on latest developments.

Amirudin said that as of this morning, 87 families had opted to relocate to rental homes and Airbnb units provided by the state government. Another 16 families were still looking for houses more convenient for their work or for their children’s studies.

The gas pipeline fire that broke out at about 8.10am on April 1 sent flames more than 30m into the sky, with temperatures soaring to 1,000 degree Celsius. It took nearly eight hours for the blaze to be extinguished.

The blaze left 81 houses destroyed, another 81 houses partially destroyed, 57 damaged but not burned, and 218 houses unaffected.
