Deputy Premier urges stronger fire, disaster preparedness in Bintulu

BINTULU (Feb 4): Residential safety and disaster preparedness must be continuously strengthened to reduce the risk of fires and natural disasters that could result in loss of life and property, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, he emphasised that public awareness of fire safety still requires serious attention, particularly through ongoing education and early preventive measures at the community level.

Dr Sim said most fire incidents are caused by minor negligence, including unsafe use of electrical appliances and improper home wiring.

“Safety at home should never be taken lightly, as small lapses can have major consequences for lives and property,” he said when officiating the ‘Komuniti Prihatin, Kediaman Selamat Bersama Bomba Sarawak 2026’ programme on Tuesday.

He added that basic fire safety knowledge can help the public respond more calmly, systematically and effectively in emergencies.

Dr Sim also cautioned that increased use of electrical appliances and cooking activities, especially during festive seasons, could heighten the risk of fire if not handled properly.

He further stressed the importance of preparedness for natural disasters, particularly flooding during the Northeast Monsoon, which requires heightened readiness at the individual, family and community levels.

Past experiences with major floods, he said, should encourage the public to stay alert to weather warnings, prepare emergency plans and follow authorities’ instructions to minimise the impact of disasters.

Also present at the programme were Tanjong Batu assemblyman Johnny Pang Leong Ming, Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department director Jamri Masran, Bintulu district officer Awang Mohammed Nizam Awang Ali Bolhan, and Bintulu district police chief Supt Nixon Joshua Ali.
