Terengganu completes flood recovery, four states still impacted

KUALA LUMPUR: Floods that hit Terengganu since Nov 22 have fully recovered, with the last temporary relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Atas Tol in Kuala Terengganu closing at 8pm on Tuesday (Dec 2).

However, four other states: Perak, Selangor, Perlis and Pahang, are still sheltering flood evacuees as of 9pm.

In TERENGGANU, the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said the 31 evacuees from 20 families housed at the SK Atas Tol relief centre were allowed to return home after floodwaters completely receded.

The floods that first struck Terengganu on Nov 22 forced nearly 11,000 residents to evacuate to more than 500 temporary relief centres across eight districts. The incident also led to 16 schools being closed due to flooding, while another 48 schools were converted into relief centres.

Pulau Redang in Kuala Nerus was the first area affected this year, followed by Marang, Besut, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, and Kemaman.

In PERAK, 3,228 evacuees from 947 families remain at 19 relief centres across five districts: Hilir Perak, Bagan Datuk, Manjung, Perak Tengah and Larut, Matang and Selama, the highest number recorded among the affected states.

Meanwhile, in SELANGOR, 1,038 evacuees from 304 families are still housed at 19 relief centres, down from 1,464 reported earlier on Tuesday afternoon. The centres are located in Kuala Selangor, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam and Sepang.

In PERLIS, a total of 551 evacuees remained at four relief centres in Padang Besar, Kangar and Arau, down from 696 people recorded earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

In PAHANG, the state JPBN reported that 124 people from 34 families were still housed in six relief centres after all centres in Temerloh were closed on Tuesday afternoon.

Bera recorded the highest number of evacuees at 92, followed by Maran (25) and Kuantan (7), while the water level of Sungai Pahang at Lubuk Paku, Maran, remained above the danger mark. – Bernama
