China floods force 80,000 to flee; Guizhou football field buried under three metres of water

BEIJING, June 25 — More than 80,000 people have had to flee their homes due to severe flooding in China’s south-western province of Guizhou, Beijing’s state media said on Wednesday.

Rescue teams have been deployed to the two affected counties, where the flood control emergency response has been raised to the highest level, state news agency Xinhua reported.

In one affected county, Rongjiang, a football field was “submerged under three meters of water”, the news agency said. One resident Long Tian told Xinhua “the water rose very quickly”.

“I stayed on the third floor waiting for rescue. By the afternoon, I had been transferred to safety,” Long said. Around 80,900 people had left their homes as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Xinhua.

China is enduring a summer of extreme weather.

This week, authorities issued the second-highest heat warning for the capital Beijing on one of its hottest days of the year so far.

SHAH ALAM: The Covid-19 situation in Selangor saw a 36% increase to 1,082 cases in Epidemiological Week (ME) 24/2025 compared to 795 cases in the previous week.

However, state Public Health and Environment executive councillor Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the numbers were still below the warning level set based on the trend of cases in Selangor for 2022 to 2024, apart from not involving any deaths so far.

“In Selangor, a total of 7,582 Covid-19 cases were recorded from ME 1 to ME 24 of 2025 (ending on June 14), compared to 18,231 cases recorded in the same period in 2024,” she said in a statement yesterday that was reported by Bernama.

"Based on the findings of the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS), adults aged 31 to 59 years old are the most frequently infected group (at 44%), followed by youth aged 18 to 30 years old (27%) and children aged one to six years old (9%),” she said.

Commenting further, Jamaliah said that for this year, a total of 7,582 individuals had undergone Covid-19 screening, of which 353 people had been admitted for further treatment. “On ME24, a patient was admitted to the intensive care unit.

“She was pregnant and also infected with dengue fever, but the patient was transferred to a regular ward on June 17,” she said.

Seorang penduduk tempatan, Long Tian, berkongsikan detik cemas yang dialaminya.

“Air naik terlalu cepat.

– AFP

Five admitted for Covid-19 in Kelantan over the past week, all recovered

KOTA BARU: Five individuals, including two children, were hospitalised for Covid-19 in Kelantan during Epidemiological Week (EW) 25, which ran from June 15 to 21.

Kelantan Health Department director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said all five patients have since made a full recovery.

He added that no Covid-19-related intensive care unit (ICU) admissions or fatalities have been recorded in the state so far this year.

"As of EW25, Kelantan has recorded a cumulative total of 303 Covid-19 cases, with an average of 12 new cases reported weekly.

"In EW24, the state logged 34 cases, showing a slight decrease from 35 the previous week," he said in a statement.

Zaini said the Covid-19 situation in Kelantan remains under control and is still below the alert threshold.

As a precautionary measure, he urged high-risk groups, including senior citizens, individuals with comorbidities, immunocompromised adolescents, pregnant women, and healthcare workers, to receive an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

He added that individuals aged 18 and above are also eligible to receive the vaccine voluntarily, subject to medical advice.

"I urge all Kelantanese, regardless of age, to get vaccinated in line with the recommendations under the National Covid-19 Immunisation programme.

"Free immunisation and vaccination services are available at selected government health clinics," he said.

Zaini reminded the public that although the country is now in the endemic phase of managing Covid-19, it remains important to practise preventive measures.

"These include frequent handwashing with soap and water or using hand sanitiser, as well as wearing face masks in crowded places," he said.

He added that the department would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates via the official portal at covid-19.moh.gov.my.
