SIBU: A landslide has severely affected the road leading to SK St Mathew and Nanga Sekuau jetty in Selangau, making it impassable today.
In a statement, Selangau Civil Defence Force (APM) said a distress call was received at about 9.02am and a team of five personnel was dispatched to the scene.
“On arrival, it was found the landslide had severely affected the road leading to SK St Mathew and Nanga Sekuau jetty,” the statement said.
APM personnel then advised the residents around Nanga Sekuau to avoid the landslide area, and urged those affected to temporarily vacate their homes.
“A detailed assessment requires expertise from the relevant authorities,” the statement added.
BINTULU (Feb 11): The Salvation Army has been among those mobilising aid for families here affected by the recent devastating floods.
Recognising the gravity of the situation, Salvation Army Bintulu Corps officer Captain Daniel Lim said those affected included groups under their care, whose homes were nearly submerged by the floodwaters.
“Upon learning of this, the Salvation Army actively sought sponsorship from businesses to gather supplies,” he said.
Lim said the Salvation Army team drove nearly an hour to the affected areas, delivering essential items such as food, rice, cooking oil and cleaning detergents, hoping to alleviate the difficulties faced by the flood victims.
“Given the current circumstances, some areas may be difficult to reach, or the residents may not have sought external help, quietly finding ways to cope with this natural disaster,” he added.
He extended special thanks to Dr Datuk Francis Toh, and Datuk Ngu Weng Hie and wife, for their generous donations.
“Their contributions have enabled the Salvation Army to specifically assist families and children in need.
“We hope their kindness will spread love to remote areas, and that the recipient families will accept this help with gratitude.”
Lim said to date, the Salvation Army here has assisted nearly 200 families and will continue to target those in need, especially the families and children they have been caring for.
“We have witnessed many people working together silently, without fanfare, and we express our gratitude to those who assist in disaster relief behind the scenes.”

SIBU (Feb 11): Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng has cautioned residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas here to be on alert for another king tide phenomenon expected on Feb 22.
He said he was informed of this during a visit to the Civil Defence Force (APM) premises here on Monday.
“APM Sibu said the water level is expected to be higher than before. People must be on alert at all times,” he said when met after the presentation of assistance to Kampung Sentosa flood victims here today.
The assistance, in the form of 148 boxes of instant noodles, was contributed by Indofood through Lions Club Sibu Seduan.
Chieng said the noodles will be distributed to eligible recipients whose houses were affected by the recent flood.
“The list of recipients is based on information provided by Kampung Usaha Jaya Baru village security and development committee (JKKK) for the Malay/Melanau community as well as for the Iban community.
“For the Chinese community, their list is provided by Kapitan Peter Lau,” said Chieng, who also thanked Indofood for the contribution.
Organising chairman Louis Ting presented the assistance on behalf of Lions Club Sibu Seduan to Chieng.
KUALA LUMPUR, 11 Feb: Bencana banjir yang melanda beberapa kawasan di negeri Sarawak telah menyentuh keprihatinan pelbagai pihak untuk sama-sama membantu rakyat yang terkesan.
Menteri Kerja Raya Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi berkata selain badan bukan kerajaan (NGO), beberapa syarikat swasta turut turun padang menyalurkan bantuan bagi meringankan beban mangsa banjir di negeri itu.
“Terbaru, Persatuan Kontraktor Bumiputera Malaysia (PKBM) turut sama memberikan sumbangan bagi membantu mangsa banjir di negeri ini,” katanya menerusi hantaran di Facebooknya hari ini.
Beliau yang juga Ahli Parlimen Kapit berkata sumbangan RM50,000 diserahkan oleh Presiden PKBM Datuk Dr Azman Yusoff kepada Timbalan Premier Sarawak Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas selaku Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Bencana Negeri Sarawak (JPBNS) di Wisma Bapa, Kuching, Sarawak tengah hari tadi.
“Terima kasih saya ucapkan kepada PKBM dan semoga bantuan ini dapat meringankan beban yang ditanggung oleh mereka yang terkesan akibat banjir di Sarawak baru-baru ini,” katanya.
Setakat malam ini, jumlah mangsa banjir di Sarawak menurun kepada 604 orang berbanding 735 orang petang tadi. -TVS
