Anwar: Over 6,000 Malaysians rescued from Thailand floods

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 6,000 Malaysians stranded by the floods in Thailand have safely returned home since the rescue mission began last Sunday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said the government, through the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra), continues to closely monitor the situation and will expedite assistance wherever necessary.

The rescue effort, he said, was made possible with the support of nearly 20 Malaysian volunteer organisations working alongside Wisma Putra, including 13 volunteer firefighters, in addition to assistance from the Thai authorities.

"I am deeply moved by the courage and perseverance of our volunteer team who were willing to wade through the flood and face risks to save Malaysians.

"My deepest appreciation and salute to our heroes," he said in a Facebook post today.

Anwar also thanked Wisma Putra, the Malaysian embassy in Thailand, the Consulate-General in Songkhla, Thai authorities, local rescue teams, and Universiti Utara Malaysia's management for their coordination in evacuating 36 students and two lecturers from UUM who were stranded in Hat Yai.

He said the hard work and commitment of all parties in ensuring their safety reflects a high level of concern and a strong spirit of togetherness, regardless of religion, race or background.

"I urge that we continue to pray that every step of the volunteers and our entire team will be facilitated in continuing the mission of bringing back Malaysians who are still trapped in Thailand.

"The government, through Wisma Putra, will continue to closely monitor this situation and provide assistance as soon as possible," he said.
