Tropical storm Senyar to hit west coast tonight, Klang Valley may see heaviest rainfall

Tropical storm Senyar to hit west coast tonight, Klang Valley may see heaviest rainfall

PETALING JAYA: Tropical storm Senyar is expected to make landfall on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia tonight.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said based on official predictions monitoring the weather system, it is expected to make landfall at the area between the border of Selangor and Perak.

"Based on forecasts from one of the regional centres in India that monitor tropical cyclones and storm activity, we expect the landfall to occur between the Perak–Selangor border, possibly around midnight.

"Currently the rainbands from the storm have reached the country, but the eye of the storm may reach land around midnight or shortly after," he said at an emergency press conference at the MetMalaysia headquarters, here.

Hisham however said that he was concerned about the storm's eye as the areas outside the eye or rainbands, usually brings the heaviest rainfall.

"Usually, the eye itself does not produce heavy rain; it is the surrounding areas, particularly the region we refer to as the southeast or southwest portion, that experience the most intense rainfall.

"This is why we are particularly cautious about the Klang Valley area," he said.

Hisham added that the storm, once making landfall, is expected to move across the peninsula towards the South China Sea.

"This means today, tonight and tomorrow it will make landfall, and possibly by tomorrow night or early Saturday morning, it will reach the east coast," he said.

Earlier, it was reported that Senyar is moving towards the west coast of peninsular Malaysia and is currently located 102km southwest of Lumut, Perak.

The weather system is currently at 3.6 degrees north, 99.9 degrees east off northern Sumatra and is tracking east-southeast into the Straits of Malacca about 24kph.

Yesterday, Hisham told the New Straits Times that Senyar is the first weather system to reach such intensity in the Straits of Melaka.
