KUALA LUMPUR: The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) will assess the Protected Areas and Prohibited Places Act 1959 (Act 298) to explore the possibility of designating certain dams as recreational areas.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof stated that while dams are currently designated as restricted zones inaccessible to the public, the government recognises the need to enhance integrated river basin management and engage local communities in preserving these areas.
However, he emphasised that strict conditions would apply, including the prohibition of swimming and fishing to prevent pollution.
“Dams are protected and preserved areas, but at the same time, we want to engage local communities in maintaining them. If we open these areas for picnics, camping, and other recreational activities, it can also generate socio-economic benefits for the surrounding community.
“At the same time, a dedicated committee will be established to oversee and ensure the preservation of these areas,” he said after chairing the special committee meeting on addressing the decline in national river water quality today.
Fadillah, who also serves as the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said the matter was among the key agreements reached during the meeting.
As a follow-up, he announced that a committee led by the DID would be established to assess the feasibility of the proposal, incorporating input from relevant state-level stakeholders.
The special committee also agreed that state governments should implement regular desludging of individual septic tanks, particularly at government premises and agencies, to help reduce river pollution.
He noted that it has also endorsed the use of innovative methods, such as the Environmental Dredging System developed by the National Water Research Institute of Malaysia, to remove contaminated sediments with minimal impact on aquatic ecosystems.

Putrajaya: Pelaksanaan kerja menerusi projek membina dan menyiapkan jalan persimpangan FT29/FT32 hingga laluan FT27 dilaksanakan secara berfasa bermula 24 Februari hingga 10 Disember 2025.
Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) dalam kenyataan hari ini memaklumkan fasa pertama melibatkan laluan dari Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi (BBST), Sepang, Selangor ke Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) dari kedua-dua arah.
"Fasa ini mengekalkan dua lorong sedia ada serta melibatkan penutupan satu lorong kanan di kedua-dua arah.
"Pengguna jalan raya dari arah BBST ke Kota Warisan perlu melalui laluan alternatif di persimpangan lampu isyarat selepas Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah Sepang ke persimpangan berhampiran pasar raya KIPMall.
"Pengguna jalan raya dari arah Putrajaya dan Kota Warisan menghala ke KLIA pula perlu melalui persimpangan tol Bandar Serenia," menurut kenyataan itu.
Bagi fasa dua hingga empat, JKR memaklumkan ia melibatkan kerja-kerja lain di sepanjang sempadan kontrak.
Susulan itu, menurut JKR laluan membelok ke kanan di persimpangan Kiwa ditutup sepenuhnya sepanjang tempoh pembinaan yang melibatkan jalan dari arah Kota Warisan dan Putrajaya menuju ke KLIA serta lalauan dari BBST ke Kota Warisan.
"JKR telah menyediakan Pelan Pengurusan Trafik serta mengaktifkan Pasukan Tindakan Kecemasan (ERT) untuk bersiap sedia sepanjang tempoh pembinaan.
"Pengguna dinasihatkan agar mematuhi peraturan lalu lintas, papan tanda keselamatan, papan tanda arah dan arahan pihak berkuasa dari semasa ke semasa demi keselamatan bersama," menurut kenyataan itu.
Menurut kenyataan itu, pelaksanaan projek itu bertujuan menyediakan rangkaian jalan raya baharu menghubungkan KLIA Terminal (T) 1, KLIA T2 dan BBST dengan Putrajaya, Cyberjaya hingga ke Puchong.
Antara skop utama projek adalah membina jalan baharu empat lorong berkembar sepanjang 1.2 kilometer, menaik taraf persimpangan lampu isyarat di laluan FT 27 dan F29/FT32, menyiapkan baki kerja jambatan merentasi Sungai Labu dan penyiasatan terhadap keutuhan struktur 'pier' dan 'pile embarkment'.
Jabatan itu memaklumkan kerja penambahbaikan tersebut dilaksanakan berdasarkan maklumat, aduan serta beberapa siri perbincangan berkaitan masalah banjir di kawasan berkenaan.
"JKR sentiasa mengambil berat dan berusaha untuk menyediakan infrastruktur dan prasarana awam terbaik serta berkualiti demi keselamatan dan kesejahteraan rakyat," menurut kenyataan itu.
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 87 people from 23 families have been evacuated to two temporary relief centres (PPS) in Telupid due to flooding as of 8 pm today.
The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, in a statement, said 67 people from 17 families were relocated to the PPS at Dewan Kampung Rancangan Nagoh, while 20 people from six families were moved to Balai Raya Kampung Maau.
According to the committee, two more PPS -- Dewan Kampung Bambangan and Masjid Lama Kampung Gana Jati -- are still in the process of receiving evacuees.
“The number of evacuees at the two PPS continues to rise tonight,” the statement said.
Telupid is an interior district in Sabah, located more than 200 kilometres east of Kota Kinabalu.
Meanwhile, Paitan is the latest district to be hit by floods, with a temporary relief centre opened tonight.
Paitan District Disaster Management Committee chairman Joloning Joe Majambu, in a separate statement, said that the house of the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairman of Kampung Kokos has been turned into a relief centre for flood victims.
“The Paitan district has now been declared a flood disaster area, and flood victims are currently being relocated to the relief centre,” said Joloning, who is also the Paitan District Officer.
Paitan is another inland district in Sabah, located more than 230 kilometres east of Kota Kinabalu.
KOTA KINABALU: Paitan menjadi daerah terbaru dilanda banjir, dengan sebuah pusat pemindahan sementara (PPS) dibuka malam ini.
Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Bencana Daerah Paitan, Joloning Joe Majambu, memaklumkan bahawa rumah Pengerusi Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung (JKKK) Kampung Kokos telah dijadikan PPS.
Sementara itu, seramai 87 orang dari 23 keluarga terpaksa dipindahkan ke dua pusat pemindahan sementara (PPS) di Telupid setakat jam 8 malam tadi.
Menurut kenyataan dari Sekretariat Jawatankuasa Pengurusan Bencana Negeri Sabah, 67 orang daripada 17 keluarga dipindahkan ke PPS Dewan Kampung Rancangan Nagoh, manakala 20 orang dari enam keluarga berlindung di Balai Raya Kampung Maau.
“Dua lagi PPS iaitu Dewan Kampung Bambangan dan Masjid Lama Kampung Gana Jati dalam proses pendaftaran mangsa,” menurut kenyataan itu.
SIBU (Feb 27): Road maintenance work at Jalan Kwong Ting in the Bawang Assan area here has commenced.
According to Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman councillor Kevin Lau, the project’s proposal was submitted to the Sibu Rural District Council last year and was approved under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris Fund).
“We hope this project and other road maintenance projects will benefit the residents and enhance the safety of road users, particularly in areas that are prone to flooding.
Lau said this when met during a site visit to Jalan Kwong Ting here yesterday.
Also accompanying him were his team members and community leader Kapitan Tang Chuo Ging.
“We will continue to monitor the project until its completion,” he assured.
