Solar power, EVs and flood mitigation: Johor's green agenda takes shape

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government has approved three major environmental policies aimed at driving sustainability, boosting renewable energy and strengthening climate resilience by 2030.

The policies, endorsed during the Johor Green Development Council meeting, focus on solar energy adoption, green transportation and flood mitigation.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the Johor Renewable Energy Policy 2030 introduced guidelines for planning and developing solar power as the state's primary clean energy source.

Meanwhile, the Johor Green Transport Policy outlines measures to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and expand charging infrastructure to encourage sustainable mobility.

To tackle climate change, the Johor Climate Change (Flood Mitigation) Policy includes a flood early warning system to enhance disaster preparedness.

Onn Hafiz emphasised the need for collaboration among local councils, developers, and government agencies to ensure smooth implementation.

"The relevant authorities are required to provide updates on the Johor Green Development Council's progress regularly, while all stakeholders are urged to accelerate execution and refine strategies where necessary," he said in a statement.

He added that the three policies must be implemented immediately to achieve Johor's 2030 green vision.

Earlier, state Health and Environment Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon had said Johor aims to lead in renewable technology and sustainability with its proactive green transport policy, targeting over 15,000 EVs within five years.

Johor also plans to triple EV charging stations to 1,245, up from 377, with local councils approving applications within seven days.

Ling had said the policy also supports Singaporean visitors, as the republic will allow only cleaner-energy vehicles from 2030.
