Malaysia, Indonesia perkukuh kerjasama pengurusan bencana

-TVS

Temporary Bailey bridge at Perak’s Sg Liat site to be completed by April 30 after collapse cuts off access

SUNGKAI, April 22 — The Bailey bridge, which will temporarily replace the collapsed Sungai Liat Bridge, is expected to be operational by April 30, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

He said the road leading to the bridge must first be repaired, while the construction of the 46-metre-long bridge will commence tomorrow and is expected to be completed by April 27.

“We hope it can be completed as scheduled, as residents in the vicinity use this route daily,” he said after visiting the collapse site at Felda Sungai Klah. Also present was Behrang assemblyman Salina Samsudin.

On April 20, the Sungai Liat Bridge collapsed, cutting off access to Felda Residence Hot Spring, Kampung Tisong and the Buyong Mas Sanctuary Campsite.

The collapse left 136 individuals stranded, including 81 students from a local polytechnic living in the area.

Yesterday, state executive councillor for Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport, Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin, announced that the collapsed bridge will be temporarily replaced with a Bailey bridge.

Meanwhile, Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan said the permanent bridge at the site is estimated to cost around RM3 million.

Salina hoped the bridge could be completed as scheduled, as residents in the affected areas currently have to use an alternative route to reach Sungkai town.

“The 1.7-kilometre detour passes through an oil palm plantation and can only be used by those with four-wheel drive vehicles,” she said. — Bernama

Myanmar post-earthquake truce set to expire

YANGON:
A Myanmar ceasefire declared after last month’s devastating earthquake was due to expire today, after aid groups and international mediators called for an extension to ease relief efforts.

The junta – which seized power in a 2021 coup sparking a many-sided civil war – said it would cease attacking its myriad armed opponents following the magnitude-7.7 quake which has killed more than 3,700.

Conflict monitors and residents in combat zones say fighting continued on both sides during the 20-day truce, declared to spur aid delivery in Myanmar’s central belt and due to expire at midnight.

State media reported no ceasefire extension this morning and a junta spokesman could not immediately be reached by AFP for comment.

The March 28 earthquake has left more than 60,000 people living in tent encampments and pushed 2 million people into “critical need of assistance and protection” according to the UN.

Despite continued fighting, humanitarian groups and regional powers have called for the pause on hostilities to be prolonged as aid efforts continue into their fourth week.

On Thursday junta chief Min Aung Hlaing flew to Bangkok to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for rare backroom talks with the chair of the 10-country Asean bloc.

Anwar, whose country currently holds the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), said he had also spoken to Myanmar’s opposition “National Unity Government” which promised a similar truce after the tremor.

Both sides agreed “they would do whatever is necessary to avoid any extension of the fighting”, Anwar told reporters after the meeting.

Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project expected to be completed by Q3 2027, says Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN, April 21 — The Sungai Pinang flood mitigation project here is expected to be fully completed by the third quarter of 2027.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the project is currently progressing on schedule, with 24 per cent of the work completed.

Chow said he visited the site today to inspect the construction of the piano weir and monsoon drain structures at Kampung Jawa, which are key components of the project.

“These components stretch from the Jalan Jelutong bridge to the end of the bridge at Jalan Perak.

“Once completed, these structures will help prevent flooding or river overflow in downstream areas, improve water quality as drain water will be channelled directly downstream, and reduce the impact of high tides,” he said in a Facebook post. — Bernama
