Sarawak air quality worsens as Kalimantan wildfires persist

KUALA LUMPUR: Air quality in Sarawak continues to deteriorate as transboundary haze from wildfires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, drifts into the state.
According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), Serian recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 195 as at 9am today.
Other areas recording unhealthy air quality were Kuching (172), Samarahan (171), Sarikei (161), Bintulu (157), Sri Aman (157), Samalaju (153), Sibu (151) and Miri (130).
The Asean Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) also reported an increase in hotspots in West Kalimantan, south of Kuching, since Aug 10.
"Moderate to dense smoke plumes observed in many parts of Kalimantan were seen drifting northwards into western Sarawak.
"Slight to moderate smoke plumes were also observed in southern Sumatra and eastern Java," the ASMC said in a 6pm update yesterday.
Air quality in the Klang Valley also entered the unhealthy zone today, with Putrajaya and Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, recording API readings of 114 and 102 respectively.
On Aug 10, Serian recorded an API reading of 185, followed by Samarahan (167), Kuching (165), Mukah (157), Sibu (156), Samalaju (153), Bintulu (152), Sarikei (152) and Sri Aman (144).
An API reading between 101 and 200 is categorised as unhealthy.
