Unhealthy air quality logged in Johan Setia, Klang, and 10 areas in Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR: Air quality in Sarawak and parts of Selangor worsened today, with 11 areas recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as of 10am.
Data from the Department of Environment (DoE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) website showed Johan Setia in Klang, Selangor, was the only location in Peninsular Malaysia in the unhealthy category with a reading of 152.
In Sarawak, Serian registered the state's highest API reading at 189, approaching the very unhealthy threshold.
Nine other areas across Sarawak also recorded unhealthy API levels: Samarahan (170), Kuching (165), Bintulu (159), Mukah (155), Samalaju (153), Sibu (153), Sarikei (153), Sri Aman (153), and Miri (119).
Most other locations in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur remained moderate, including Shah Alam (97), Petaling Jaya (89), Banting (88), Cheras (89), and Kuala Lumpur (86), while Kapit in Sarawak logged a moderate reading of 77.
An API reading between 0 and 50 is categorised as good, 51 to 100 as moderate, 101 to 200 as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, and 300 and above as hazardous.
Unhealthy air quality poses health risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions or chronic illnesses.
Members of the public are advised to closely monitor official updates on the APIMS portal, limit prolonged outdoor physical activities, and wear protective masks when heading outdoors.
