4-hour downpour sees homes submerged in Perak flash floods

IPOH:
Flood waters rose to one metre early this morning in Kampung Lasah, Sungai Siput, submerging more than 10 houses after four hours of continuous heavy rain.

The civil defence force’s Sungai Siput operations control centre said in a statement that several surrounding roads were also submerged, including those in Kampung Chenein, Kampung Jong and Kampung Bawong.

“We received a distress call at 1.24am. The heavy rain lasted four hours, but by 6am it had eased to a light drizzle.

“Roads were flooded and access routes were cut off. Our personnel are on the site to monitor the situation. So far, conditions are under control,” the statement read.

As of 9am, no temporary relief centres have been opened. However, some residents have moved to their neighbours’ or relatives’ homes. Weather conditions have since turned fair.

Meanwhile, Perak fire and rescue department operations division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said an elderly woman, a woman with disabilities and a man trapped inside their home were rescued.

He said the department received a distress call at 4.13am. The flooding, he added, was caused by overflow from Sungai Pelus, with water levels up to an estimated one metre by the time rescue teams arrived at the scene.

“We found an 80-year-old woman, a 55-year-old woman with disabilities, and a man in his 40s inside the flooded house. The operations chief also advised all other villagers to evacuate if water levels rose,” Sabarodzi said in a separate statement.

All three victims were then temporarily moved to the Kampung Lasah community hall, with help from village committee members.

“Water levels have since started to recede. Further monitoring will be carried out from time to time,” he said, adding that the operation ended at 9.50am.
