34 killed, another four missing as monsoon rains wreak havoc in India's Himachal Pradesh

NEW DELHI (Xinhua): At least 34 people were killed, four reported missing, and 74 were injured in the monsoon rains during the past nine days in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, officials said Sunday.

The cumulative damages to the infrastructure during this period have been estimated at 8.32 million U.S. dollars, according to a report released by the State Emergency Operations Centre.

The disaster management authority also confirmed damage to houses, livestock shelters, government buildings, roads, water supply and power lines in the state.

The local government of Himachal Pradesh has put emergency services on high alert.

Officials said in the wake of rainfall, water levels in all major rivers and streams in the state have risen.

Reports said nearly 40 roads are still blocked in the affected areas due to landslides.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain in the state for the next two days. - Xinhua
