FLOODS HIT SABAH, SARAWAK

HEAVY rain since Saturday night has led to flooding in residential areas in Sarawak, including Batu Kawa here. The situation was severe in Kampung Sinar Budi Baru and Taman Desa Wira.

A temporary evacuation centre was opened at Dewan Futsal in Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, said a spokesperson for the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department.

Seven people from one family evacuated there, with the official count of evacuees still pending at press time.

“Several homes have been inundated, with water levels rising up to knee height.

“Ongoing rainfall may worsen the situation.

“Rescue teams are monitoring the area and residents are advised to evacuate if conditions continue to worsen,” said the spokesperson.

In Mukah, flash floods affected Kampung Skim Penempatan Kuala Lama, prompting the relocation of residents, including two elderly women, aged 87 and 83, who were moved to their children’s homes.

Three others, including a woman and two children, were also relocated.

In Saratok, flooding submerged roads and a bridge leading to SK Ulu Kabong, disrupting access between the town and villages.

A preschool classroom at the school was reportedly innundated.

In Lundu, access to Kampung Pasir Hulu was cut off by flash floods yesterday morning.

Although the water had receded, the village road remained severely damaged.

In Sarikei, 21 units at Rumah Panjang Anap in Jalan Bayong and Ulu Sarikei was affected by flooding.

In Sabah, Bernama reported that the number of flood victims remained at 1,054 people from 355 families up to Saturday morning.

The state Civil Defence Force said 993 flood victims from 338 families were placed at seven flood relief centres in Pitas, while 61 victims from 17 families were at three centres in Paitan.

“No rain was reported this morning in Pitas and Paitan,” it said.

Pitas Disaster Management Committee chairman Asdi@ Mohd Faizal Hussin said the weather in the district had improved and the 15 roads closed due to the floods had been opened.

“Only Jalan Kampung Kusilad is still affected by floods,” he said.
