Ground zero checks halted

SUBANG JAYA: Ongoing safety concerns have prevented ground zero technical on-site investigations and inspections of the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor Mentri Besar said among the safety concerns include the recent erratic weather conditions with bouts of heavy rain over the last few days.

“There are also concerns over the unstable ground at ground zero after the explosion had caused the earth to be exposed.

“The soft and exposed soil will result in investigators tripping and falling,” he told a press conference at the Putra Heights mosque relief centre yesterday.

Amirudin said as a result, the technical investigation is focused on the analysis of technical documentation surrounding the site of the incident.

He said a full technical report is expected to be completed some time in the middle of next month at the earliest.

Amirudin also said 87 households severely affected by the fire have registered for temporary Airbnb accommodation.

“However, 16 of the families have yet to finalise the arrangement due to complications in preparations.

“The state government will hand over necessary documents to help the affected victims move in to their new temporary homes on Monday,” he said.

The Mentri Besar said the documentation would enable affected families to receive rental aid of RM2,000 per month for six months, which, he noted, would be paid to their bank accounts on a monthly basis.

Amirudin said starting next week, the current state task force in charge of the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire would transition towards purely implementing recovery efforts.

“Only the investigation division will remain active and continue monitoring all ongoing investigations,” he added.

On the recovery efforts, he said 1,402 volunteers have registered to take part in this weekend’s mega gotong-royong programme to clean areas affected by the disaster.

“Much of the previous clean-up efforts were concentrated in Putra Harmoni and Putra Heights as permission was granted earlier.

“The authorities have given the green light to go into Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru a few days ago, so we will mobilise volunteers, machinery and other resources to carry out the work,” he said.

Amirudin said previous clean-up efforts saw over 100 tonnes of trash removed from the affected areas.

“Affected students have received assistance in the form of allowances, laptops, tablets and power banks from the Selangor Mentri Besar Incorporated (MBI).

“A total of RM132,500 were given out comprising RM500 cash aid to 265 affected students,” he said.

Additionally, 100 tablets and power banks and 75 laptops, donated by the Digital Ministry, were distributed to 38 school students and 37 undergraduates, along with book vouchers worth RM200, to help replace school supplies lost in the fire.

Surau penyelamat ibu, bayi

Muhammad Ammar Abu Kassim, 32, berkata, ketika kejadian dia sekeluarga sedang tidur sebelum menyedari air memasuki kediamannya, kira-kira pukul 3 pagi.

No respite as Putra Heights pipeline fire victims face floods

Residents of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru and Kampung Tengah, who are still reeling from the April 1 gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, were hit by floods yesterday morning.

Heavy rain that started early yesterday forced residents in both villages to be moved again to the temporary relief centre at Masjid Putra Heights.

Mohd Kamalzaman Pauzi, 39, said his house, located less than 100 metres from the river in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, got flooded around 6am, forcing him, his wife and their three young children to be evacuated to the relief centre.

“The river water began to rise around 4.20am, but we only moved out of our home when the situation worsened.

“We have moved back here (to the relief centre) within a week. I haven’t even had time to get over the fire and now we have been hit by floods,” he said.

Kamalzaman said since moving to the rented house five years ago, they have been hit by floods three times. The worst ones were in December 2022 and March 2023.

“Both times, we had to move to higher ground near the tahfiz. “We had to use ropes to get across because of the river’s strong currents,” he said.

Kamalzaman added that this time, he could only watch helplessly as rainwater poured into the house as the roof, which was damaged by the gas pipeline fire, had yet to be repaired.

“The roof over our kitchen area was affected by the fire, so all the items there get drenched whenever it rains,” said the burger seller.

Hundreds in 5 Selangor districts hit by floods

FIVE districts in Selangor were hit by floods yesterday morning due to continuous rain that began around 1am. Selangor Civil Defence Force director Ghazali Abd Rahman said the affected districts were Petaling, Klang, Sepang, Hulu Langat and Gombak.

“In Petaling, the areas flooded included Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, Kampung Tengah, Kampung Baru Hicom, Kampung Seri Aman, Kampung Padang Jawa, and the motorcycle lane along the Federal Highway (Shah Alam).

“In Klang, flash floods were reported in Bukit Payung; Taman Daya, Meru; Pekan Meru, Taman Mutiara, and Taman Sri Muda.

“In Sepang, the affected areas included Kampung Abu Bakar Baginda, Sungai Merab and Desa Vila Merab,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Ghazali said areas hit in Hulu Langat included Laman Gahal and Batu 14, while in Gombak it was along Jalan Ayer Panas.

While the total number of flood victims in the state has yet to be determined, hundreds have been affected, including 137 people in Meru, Klang alone.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari confirmed one fatality due to electrocution — a foreign national in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam.

He said Tenaga Nasional Bhd had been notified to cut off electricity supply in the affected areas to prevent further incidents. “We also urge victims to switch off their power supply.

“Although the flood situation has improved slightly, especially after the rain, which fell continuously from midnight until this (yesterday) morning, we still advise caution,” he said during a press conference yesterday.

According to the “Public Info Banjir” website, as of 10am, the water level in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, had exceeded the danger level of five metres by 0.09 metres, before gradually receding. Traffic also began improving as the rain eased, police said.

Affected areas in Taman Sri Muda included Persiaran Budiman, Persiaran Jubli Perak, Persiaran Perusahaan Seksyen 23, Aeon Big Seksyen 23, Jalan Mantap Seksyen 25/129, and the Shell petrol station in Seksyen 19.

In Gombak, a minor landslide damaged a house at an Orang Asli village in Batu 12, Gombak, around 5am yesterday.

“We deployed a fire engine and six personnel to the area,” Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail said. No casualties were reported.
