KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 21): The flood situation in Sabah is improving while the number of victims in Sarawak remains unchanged as of this afternoon.
The Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) in a statement today said the number of victims declined to 130 people from 31 families this afternoon, compared to 439 people from 128 families this morning.
It said only two temporary relief centres remain operational, serving the districts of Penampang and Papar.
“The number of flood victims housed in the relief centre in Papar has reduced to only seven people, while Penampang still has 123 victims. In addition, the flood situation in Membakut has improved with two relief centres closed this afternoon,” the statement said.
The committee added that only three villages remain affected this afternoon, one in Penampang and two in Papar.
In Sarawak, the National Disaster Control Centre portal revealed that the number of flood victims sheltering at Dewan Suarah Marudi in Miri remained at 16 people from five families this afternoon.
Data from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage’s Public Infobanjir portal showed that the river level at the Long Teru station stood at 8.69 metres (m), above the danger level of 8 m, but showing a declining trend.
The water level at the Marudi station was 4.12 m compared to the danger level of 3.25 m, also showing a downward trend.
So far, no rainfall has been reported in the affected areas. – Bernama
SHAH ALAM: All local authorities (PBT) in Selangor have been instructed to immediately maintain any drainage systems at risk of causing flash floods in the state, said State Execuitive Councillor (Exco) for Youth and Sports Mohd Najwan Halimi.
Mohd Najwan, who is also the State Disaster Management Committee chairman, said the directive must be implemented promptly to prevent flood incidents in non-hotspot areas, such as the recent case in Ulu Bernam, Hulu Selangor, which affected many families.
"Based on recent incidents, all local authorities have been ordered to take immediate action to manage drainage systems that require attention, particularly in areas at risk of waterlogging or flash floods during the rainy season," he said at a press conference on the organisation of SUKMA 2026 here today.
He was commenting on measures taken by the state government following floods that struck several areas two days ago, which led to the opening of two temporary evacuation centres (PPS) at Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Sekolah Sungai Selisik and Dewan Orang Ramai Ulu Bernam to house 43 families from more than five affected villages.
Meanwhile, Mohd Najwan said he and the disaster management team completed visits to nine districts across Selangor last week, meeting community leaders and village heads involved in the Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) training programme.
He said that through the training, conducted in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), participants were exposed to the concepts, types, categories and profiles of natural disasters in Malaysia.
He added that community leaders and village heads also received detailed information on disaster management mechanisms, including processes that focus on building resilient communities.
"In the event of any disaster, those who have been trained will already be prepared to be mobilised as they have the basic knowledge while awaiting assistance from the authorities to arrive at their locations," he said.

PETALING JAYA – Jabatan Meteorologi (MetMalaysia) mengeluarkan amaran ribut petir dan hujan lebat yang dijangka melanda sehingga 9 pagi ini.
MetMalaysia memaklumkan dalam satu kenyataan, amaran itu melibatkan negeri Perak, Terengganu, Pahang, Kuantan, Selangor dan Sarawak.
“Antara kawasan yang dijangka terjejas adalah Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk dan Hilir Perak di Perak manakala Marang, Dungun dan Kemaman di Terengganu.
Selain itu, Kuantan di Pahang serta Sabak Bernam dan Kuala Selangor di Selangor turut terlibat dalam cuaca buruk itu,” ujarnya.
Bagi negeri Sarawak, keadaan sama tertumpu di Samarahan (Simunjan), Mukah (Dalat dan Mukah), Kapit (Song dan Kapit) dan Bintulu. – KOSMO! ONLINE
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a heavy rain and thunderstorm warning for Selangor and four other states until 9am today.
In a statement posted on its Facebook page this morning, MetMalaysia said the other states affected by the advisory are Perak, Pahang, Terengganu, and Sarawak.
The department said the advisory applies to the Sabak Bernam and Kuala Selangor districts in Selangor.
In Perak, the districts expected to be affected are Larut, Matang and Selama, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk, and Hilir Perak.
For Pahang, the advisory applies to Kuantan, while in Terengganu, the affected districts are Marang, Dungun, and Kemaman.
Meanwhile, in Sarawak, the department said the advisory covers Simunjan in Samarahan, Dalat and Mukah, Song and Kapit, as well as Bintulu.
KOTA KINABALU, Sept 19 — The body of a Sabah Electricity worker who was swept away by strong currents while on duty in Apin-Apin, Keningau two days ago was found yesterday evening by a volunteer group.
According to Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Mohd Pisar Aziz, Masdeh Rasmin, 35, was found at 6.18pm yesterday in Sungai Kampung Liau Laut, about 21 kilometres from where he was swept away.
Masdeh’s body was recovered by a group of local volunteers calling themselves Team Gallon Star, known for using two empty plastic gallon bottles tied to a stick as makeshift floaters to brave the swollen river.
“Today’s search focused on the Kampung Linsudan area, after the discovery of the victim’s shoe along the riverbank. The distance from where he went missing to Kampung Linsudan is about 21 kilometres,” Mohd Pisar said in a statement.
The tragedy occurred when Masdeh and two colleagues were swept away by floodwaters while attempting to cross a bridge on their way to restore electricity supply in Kampung Nuntunan, Apin-Apin.
His colleagues managed to save themselves, but Masdeh was pulled away by the strong currents.
The victim was wearing a Sabah Electricity vest and was sighted in Sungai Kepayan, but rescuers could not reach him.
