KUCHING, May 6: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has confirmed that no seismic activity was detected in Kota Samarahan, despite reports of mysterious tremors experienced by residents.
“The National Weather and Geophysics Operations Center at MetMalaysia headquarters in Petaling Jaya operates 24/7 to monitor all earthquake activity,” he said.
However, residents in Kota Samarahan have described a different experience, with many reporting two distinct tremors — one at around 9.30am and another at 3pm.
A resident, Kudus Tony, 52, said he felt a brief tremor lasting a few seconds.
Another resident, Mohammad Zulfikar Daud, 30, described a more intense experience, saying the vibrations were accompanied by loud booming sounds.
“When it happened again, the deck vibrated. I grabbed my child’s hand. There were two booming sounds followed by shaking,” he said.
While no injuries or structural damage have been reported, the discrepancy between official data and residents’ accounts has prompted calls for further investigation.
MetMalaysia has advised the public to rely on verified channels for accurate and up-to-date seismic information. – TVS
