MARTS urges Malaysian amateur radio users to avoid 7.095 MHz for Philippine typhoon emergency

MELAKA, Nov 9 — The Malaysian Amateur Radio Transmitters’ Society (MARTS) has urged all amateur radio operators in Malaysia to refrain from using the 7.095 MHz frequency, which is currently being used by the Philippine Amateur Radio Association (PARA) for emergency communications following the threat of Typhoon Fung-wong in the country.

MARTS deputy president Zanirul Akhmal Zanirun said the move was taken after the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) Region 3 issued an official notice requesting the cooperation of all amateur radio stations in the region to keep the frequency clear to allow emergency traffic to operate without disruption.

“According to reports, the Philippine National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has activated amateur and civic radio groups in each region to assist government emergency communications, particularly in areas cut off due to the typhoon.

“Therefore, amateur radio operators in Malaysia are urged to give full cooperation by refraining from any activity on the frequency and giving full priority to PARA,” he said in a statement here today.

He said amateur radio serves as a lifeline during crises, and every small contribution from the amateur radio community can have a significant impact on rescue operations. — Bernama
