KUCHING (July 10): Remedial works are being carried out at a housing area in Tabuan Heights here following a landslide incident on Nov 30, 2024, which caused the collapse of a retaining wall and damaged the backyards of four houses.

A new retaining wall will be constructed as part of the slope stabilisation works, alongside backfilling works to restore the affected backyards, said Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Kho Teck Wan, in a statement issued yesterday.

She said the project is expected to take about six months to complete.

Kho, who accompanied Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How during a site inspection on Sunday, said multiple meetings have been held with stakeholders, including affected homeowners, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sarawak, Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and other relevant agencies.

“The discussions were focussed on finding a safe and effective solution.

“As the repair work was not part of a planned state project, it took some time for Sarawak DID to secure the necessary funding for the remediation works,” she added.

She expressed appreciation to all parties involved, saying: “From the initial construction of the temporary retention wall using the geo bags, to establishing communication with the house owners, designing a new drainage system, and securing funds – my sincere thanks to everyone who played a role in making this project possible.”

Kho also thanked DID Sarawak and See for their support and efforts in ensuring the project moved forward.

“The project has now been officially handed over. We were on-site last Sunday with DID engineers, contractors, community leaders, and local councillors to brief the residents on the upcoming works,” she said.

Kho also said that the team will continue monitoring the project to ensure its timely completion.
