Monsoon rains kill 45 in 4 days across Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Seven more people have died in rain-triggered accidents across Pakistan over the past two days, raising the death toll to 45 since the onset of the monsoon season on June 26, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said Sunday.

The number of wounded rose to 68 after six more people sustained injuries in torrential rains that have lashed almost all provinces of the country, the NDMA said in a statement.

Most casualties occurred as a result of roof collapses and flash floods that swept away houses and bridges, the authority added.

The NDMA said that 89 houses have been either partially or fully destroyed, while 55 heads of livestock have also perished.

The NDMA said that the water flow across rivers and dams in the country remain normal.

Relief activities were continuing, with the NDMA and local volunteers distributing essential supplies.

Meanwhile, the NDMA has issued weather alerts for widespread rains and thunderstorms expected to affect major parts of the country over the next 12 to 24 hours.

The NDMA has urged provincial disaster management authorities, district administrations, and line departments to stay alert, ensure preemptive measures, and activate contingency plans to minimize potential damages.
