Tremors felt in West Malaysia after 7.4-magnitude quake hits Myanmar

PETALING JAYA:

Several states in West Malaysia felt tremors this afternoon after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar.

Witness accounts report that tremors were also felt in Butterworth, Penang.

The meteorological department (MetMalaysia) said there was, however, no tsunami threat in Malaysia.

MetMalaysia said the epicentre of the earthquake was about 55km southwest of Mandalay, Myanmar, with a depth of 10km.

It also urged those who felt the tremors to fill a survey here.

Reuters quoted the US Geological Survey as reporting that the earthquake had a 7.7-magnitude. The earthquake reportedly affected Bangkok, Thailand, with hundreds of people evacuating buildings in panic following the tremors.
