Floods: 70 evacuated in Kota Tinggi

JOHOR BARU: About 70 people have been relocated to two temporary relief centres in Kota Tinggi following heavy rainfall that started early Wednesday (Feb 5).

The Johor disaster management committee said the victims are from Kampung Baru Sungai Mas, Taman Desaru Utama and Taman Penawar Harmoni.

“The relocation was carried out between 4am and 5am. They were rescued after some of their houses were inundated.

“The victims are now placed temporarily at two gazetted locations, namely Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas and Dewan Muafakat Taman Desaru Utama,” it said in a statement.

Penawar fire station operations commander Soleh Nasir said about 80% of the residents at Taman Desaru Utama had been evacuated.

“The water level is knee deep and rescue operations are ongoing," he said.
