SHAH ALAM: The Fire and Rescue Department has identified 572 open fire hotspots nationwide based on incidents recorded over the past three years.
Its director Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said these locations in Selangor, Johor, Perak, Kedah and Sabah have been frequently affected by open fires.
"We have directed all fire stations to remain on high alert, particularly in these hotspot areas.
"All logistics are being prepared to ensure swift action, especially in the early stages of any outbreak.
"At the same time, we are working closely with the District and Land Office, the Irrigation and Drainage Department, and other relevant agencies to coordinate firefighting efforts and asset deployment," he said after the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Medal Award Ceremony.
At the event, 277 officers and personnel from Selangor received certificates of appreciation, comprising 102 recipients of the Fire and Rescue Service Medal, 116 recipients of the Excellent Service Medal, 29 recipients of the 30 Years of Service Award, and 12 recipients of the Commendable Service Award.
Nor Hisham said open burning incidents involved fires affecting rubbish, shrubs, forests and peatland.
"As of May 15, there have been 3,261 open burning cases nationwide, comprising 2,917 cases of bush and grass fires, 229 forest fires, and 115 orchard and plantation fires."
Meanwhile, commenting on the latest developments regarding the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, Nor Hisham said the authorities are still awaiting the results of the hardness test on specimens sent to the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia.
"Officially, we have not yet received information from the Occupational Safety and Health Department.
"Once we have the results, we will combine them with findings from their department and ours to determine the next course of action," he said.
A total of 130 units of fire department quarters will be built in Kota Kemuning and Shah Alam, with the tender process by the Public Works Department scheduled for March 2026, he said.
"The construction of these quarters is expected to resolve the housing issues faced by officers and personnel in the Sepang and Petaling districts.
"As of now, there are 430 existing fire department quarters in Selangor, with 66 applications on the waiting list since 2023," he said.
ALOR GAJAH: The federal government has approved RM450 million in funding for the Sungai Baru Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) in Masjid Tanah, aimed at addressing recurring floods in the area.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the project will span a 15km stretch from Sungai Durian Daun to the mouth of Sungai Kuala Baru, and will include the construction of four flood retention ponds in Kampung Londang, Kampung Jeram, Kampung Lubuk Redan and Taman Gamelan.
"This is a long-term initiative to tackle the flood problems affecting Masjid Tanah," he told reporters after visiting a Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) pump house as part of the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) engagement programme for the Lendu constituency at Taman Masjid Tanah Ria.
Also present were State Secretary Datuk Azhar Arshad, State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee chairman Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Lendu assemblyman Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.
For short-term flood prevention, Ab Rauf said the DID is implementing RM3.3 million worth of state-funded projects, including the installation of pumps, construction of pump houses and compact substations, and river maintenance works.
Two existing flood retention ponds, Durian Daun and Solok Duku, are also undergoing rehabilitation at a combined cost of RM1.85 million, with completion expected by December.
On a separate matter, Ab Rauf urged the state's stage bus operator to take greater responsibility for safety standards, calling for improved driver training following a series of fatal public transport accidents.
He said several incidents were linked to negligent driving, resulting in loss of life.

PETALING JAYA: Nearly three months after a devastating explosion in Putra Heights that shattered lives on the second day of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, residents are still grappling with unanswered questions and an uncertain future.
Kamisah Khamis, 48, told theSun although she and her family have resumed their daily routines, they have yet to recover from the trauma of watching their home go up in flames.
When asked whether any authorities had reached out to the affected residents, she said no one had come forward to explain what caused the explosion or who was responsible.
“There have been some discussions in our WhatsApp group – we’ve talked about compensation and other matters. But one thing is still unclear – my family and I have no idea who the contractor was.
Since the incident, Kamisah and her family have been displaced. They are currently living in a flat near Shah Alam, after a brief stay in a rented Airbnb unit arranged by her father-in-law.
“My father-in-law introduced us to the owner. The unit was actually up for sale, but the owner agreed to rent it to us temporarily because of our circumstances.
“Thankfully, our children’s schools are nearby. My husband drops them off on his way to work, and I pick them up later. They’re in their final year of school, so we’re really reluctant to move them,” she added. Her eldest child is 17, the second is 12, and the youngest is four.
Their previous home in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru was severely damaged and rendered uninhabitable. Despite the trauma, Kamisah said her family hopes to return to the area – even with its proximity to the pipeline.
Another affected resident, civil servant Aziah Puteh Azib, 55, shared a similar experience. Her late father’s house in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru was completely destroyed in the blast, forcing her and her husband to relocate to Bandar Sri Damansara.
“The residents have met Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB), which has been appointed to rebuild homes in our village,” she said.
Although grateful, Aziah admitted that the new house won’t match the sentimental value of the original, which was built using rare timber that is no longer available in Malaysia.
Aziah also chose not to speculate on the contractor’s identity.
According to previous reports, the contractor had been conducting earthworks just 30m from the explosion site. An excavator which was used in the project sank into the ground during the blast. It has since been located but has yet to be retrieved.
In response to the tragedy, the Selangor state government allocated RM6,000 in rental assistance for three months to 445 eligible families.
Further aid for rental extensions is expected in July or August, according to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming also announced that RM40 million has been allocated to support repairs and reconstruction for affected homes.
The amount of aid provided will depend on the extent of damage sustained. Homes that suffered over 40% damage and require complete rebuilding are eligible for up to RM300,000.
For houses with more than 40% damage but not in need of full reconstruction, the maximum assistance is RM150,000. Properties with less than 40% damage can receive up to RM30,000.
Sime Darby, the master developer of Putra Heights, has been tasked with supporting restoration work, while SPNB is overseeing the reconstruction of homes in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.
