PETALING JAYA: The aftermath of the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire has left an undisclosed number of evacuees with respiratory and skin issues.
Exposure to and inhalation of soot, smoke and dust from the fire affected two of Amri Tidi's children, who suffered sore throat and breathing difficulties soon after escaping from their house in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.
The father of four said their condition improved after receiving treatment from medical personnel at the relief centre.
"We saw many others, especially those who lived closer to the site of the fire, suffer from burns due to the extreme heat.
"The tar on the road melted and those fleeing barefooted were badly injured," added the 47-year-old, when met yesterday.
Airline personnel Muhammad Norman Zaharifudin, 48, whose house at Putra Avenue Topaz was badly damaged, said two of his children also suffered breathing difficulties due to inhalation of smoke and other pollutants.
"Oxygen had to be administered to one of my children," he added.
Medical volunteers stationed at the relief centre in Putra Heights mosque said the evacuees mainly suffered eye and skin irritations, breathing difficulties and mild burns.
A Red Crescent personnel, who declined to be named, said those with health conditions are being attended to by healthcare personnel from the Health Ministry.
"Their health is being closely monitored by medical personnel here round-the-clock. "Ambulances are on standby too. We are doing our best to keep them comfortable," he said.
The ministry has also stationed mental health experts at the relief centre to attend to the victims. The mosque is providing shelter to 382 people from 99 families, mainly from Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru and Kampung Tengah.
Among them are 107 children, eight babies, 37 senior citizens and 17 disabled persons.
Another resident of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, whose rented house was completely destroyed, said she was grateful to the Health Ministry, other agencies and volunteers at the relief centre.
"We may have lost everything, but knowing we are well treated here with ample food brings some comfort and helps ease our suffering," she said.
Meanwhile, a public health expert has advised victims to steer clear of affected areas to avoid health complications.
The heavy burning would have left significant amounts of particulate matters (PM) of between 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) and 10 micrometers (PM10) in the air and surrounding area, said Prof Dr Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
She said the PM could have landed on clothing and items used by victims amid the strong winds blowing that day.
PM might lead to respiratory irritation when inhaled, or even induce and aggravate asthma.
"Excessive inhalation of PM can even lead to cardiovascular diseases in the future.
"Victims may need to clean or get rid of their soiled clothes and stay away from the area for a few days. Those who are already feeling the effects should wear a mask and obtain oxygen support,” she said.
Sharifa added that those who suffered acute exposure to methane, a major component of natural gas, either during or after the fire could develop symptoms of poisoning, such as shortness of breath or dizziness.
She also warned of possible smog and acid rain due to nitrogen oxides (NOx) produced by the combustion of natural gas.
PETALING JAYA – Mangsa insiden letupan kebakaran saluran paip gas di Putra Heights, memohon agar bantuan dapat diselaraskan dengan lebih baik selepas mendapati kelemahan dalam pengurusan bantuan di Pusat Pemindahan Sementara (PPS) Masjid Putra Heights.
Salah seorang mangsa yang enggan dikenali berkata, penerima bantuan terpaksa keluar dari PPS dan berjalan sejauh kira-kira 200 meter ke LRT Putra Heights sekali gus memaksa mereka menyeberangi jalan untuk mendapatkan pertolongan.
“Kenapa suruh mangsa keluar dari PPS hanya untuk ambil bantuan saya mempersoalkan tindakan pihak berkuasa yang dilihat tidak memudahkan urusan mangsa bencana.
“Pengurusan data penerima bantuan juga lemah menyebabkan kami perlu mengisi borang berkali-kali dan ada yang akhirnya terlepas daripada menerima bantuan,” katanya.
Menurutnya, selain bantuan harian, mangsa turut berdepan ketidakpastian mengenai bantuan jangka panjang.
Tambahnya, rumahnya telah diisytiharkan tidak selamat untuk diduduki, menyebabkan dia ditempatkannya di kuarters sementara sehingga pembaikan bumbung dan sistem pendawaian selesai.
“Saya masih tertanya-tanya bagaimana bantuan pembinaan semula akan disalurkan untuk mereka yang rumahnya musnah 100 peratus dan tidak selamat untuk diduduki,” katanya.
Dakwanya, pengagihan bantuan kenderaan juga tidak mempunyai semakan ketat menyebabkan mereka yang tidak benar-benar terjejas turut menerima bantuan.
“Bantuan kenderaan tidak disemak dengan teliti kerana terdapat individu yang baru sahaja pulang dari kampung tetapi kenderaan mereka langsung tidak terjejas.
“Satu keluarga yang ada tiga adik beradik yang lain dalam satu rumah boleh dapat sehingga tiga kereta tetapi mereka yang ‘total lost’ dimana mangsa yang kehilangan kenderaan sepenuhnya tidak mendapat bantuan yang sepatutnya,” katanya.
Dia berharap agar pihak berwajib segera menambah baik sistem pengurusan bantuan, termasuk membangunkan sistem data berpusat untuk memudahkan pemantauan dan penyaluran bantuan dengan lebih cekap. – KOSMO! ONLINE.
BANGKOK: The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Command Centre issued an official announcement on Thursday (April 3), stating that the disaster situation in the metropolitan area caused by an earthquake has now ended.
All areas in the city are no longer disaster zones, except for the area around the construction site of the new State Audit Office (SAO) building on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, Chatuchak District, the statement said.
The under-construction 30-story building collapsed on March 28, 2025, following an earthquake in Myanmar, trapping several workers inside.
The centre stated that although the overall disaster situation in Bangkok has returned to normal, search and rescue operations are still ongoing at the collapsed building.
Officials from various agencies, including rescue workers, structural engineers, and medical teams, are continuing rescue efforts using modern equipment and technology to minimise risks to the personnel involved.
The centre explained that the operation area has been divided into zones, with task forces mobilised to search for those who may still be trapped inside.
BANGKOK – Enam lubang benam gergasi muncul di daerah Khun Yuam, wilayah Mae Hong Son, menyebabkan penduduk tempatan diselubungi kebimbangan, lapor laman berita Thaiger semalam.
Lubang benam berdiameter antara 2 hingga 30 meter itu pertama kali ditemukan pada 29 hingga 30 Mac lalu di kawasan pertanian di kampung Ban Mae Surin.
Menurut Pejabat Wilayah 1 Sumber Mineral, lubang benam itu dicetuskan oleh gegaran seismik daripada gempa bumi sekuat 7.7 magnitud yang berpusat di Myanmar pada 28 Mac lalu.
Lubang-lubang benam itu tidak menunjukkan tanda-tanda memperlahan, sebaliknya penenggelaman dan pengembangannya semakin berterusan.
Akhbar The Nation melaporkan, apabila semakin besar kelompangan di bawah tanah, bahagian atas tanah menjadi terlalu berat untuk menampung struktur yang menipis.
Ia mengakibatkan berlakunya pembentukan lubang benam.
Pejabat Wilayah 1 Sumber Mineral telah meminta agar kawasan sekitar lubang benam dipagar untuk memastikan orang ramai dan haiwan peliharaan berada dalam jarak yang selamat. –

GEORGE TOWN: Blankets and folding beds worth RM460,000 from the Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merits Society Malaysia are on their way to the Myanmar Red Cross Society.
The society's Penang commissioner Datuk Khoo Boo Leong said the items weighing 7.85 tonnes would be delivered using a military plane on Monday.
"They comprise 690 pieces of blankets and 520 pieces of folding beds specifically for hospitals.
"On behalf of the Malaysian Government, an Air Force plane from the Royal Malaysian Air Force's airbase in Subang would deliver the items to the government in Myanmar.
"Two members from the society would accompany the plane and they would return on the same day after handing over the aid," he said on Saturday (April 5).
According to Khoo, the plane would also carry aid from the Malaysian Red Crescent Society worth RM54,021 and from the Kembara Kitchen worth RM40,000.
