Disaster preparedness helps reduce property losses – Ahmad Zahid

IPOH (Oct 11): Preparedness in disaster management helps reduce property losses, including damage to public assets and infrastructure, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said that losses due to disasters in the country last year reached RM636.9 million, including RM380.2 million involving public assets and infrastructure.

“This figure was lower than the RM933.4 million in 2024. That is why preparedness must protect two important values, namely the value of life and economic value. Yes, we want to save lives, while also protecting homes, taking care of people’s livelihoods and preserving the fruits of the people’s hard work.

“This is where the early warning system comes in. These are awareness programmes that we must collectively translate into action. We want to raise public awareness of the importance of National Preparedness Month (BKN) in building the capacity to address potential risks before disaster strikes,” said Ahmad Zahid, who also chairs the Central Disaster Management Committee.

He said this when officiating at the launch of BKN 2026 at the Ipoh Convention Centre here today.

Also present were Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) director-general Datuk Seri Meor Ismail Meor Akim.

Ahmad Zahid said rescue teams would be mobilised whenever a disaster occurred, while the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) provided early warning systems to identify hotspots expected to experience floods and other disaster risks.

“The MetMalaysia director-general will input data into the system and notify NADMA, and me specifically, so that we can inform potential victims to evacuate and be prepared at least three days before a disaster strikes.

“However, the ability to respond efficiently after a disaster must be accompanied by a strong commitment to reducing risks before they occur. Our success is also be measured by how effectively we protect the public and reduce the risks faced by those who may be affected,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said disaster risk reduction should begin at the land-use planning and urban development stages, including identifying areas at risk of landslides and taking early action.

In addition, he said river management and the monitoring of high-risk areas are crucial for mitigating the impact of disasters.

He said early warning must be timely, easily understood and followed by actions to save lives during disasters, including giving families sufficient time to evacuate before water levels rise and helping the elderly and children reach safety, with effective communication being a key factor.

Ahmad Zahid also urged every state to translate the National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy 2030 into action plans tailored to local risks, with clearly defined agency responsibilities and implementation targets to ensure comprehensive protection for the people.

“We have managed to develop the Cell Broadcast System through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which is now in its final stage. The system does not merely monitor TikTok and other online posts; it also allows alerts to be sent directly to mobile phones in at-risk areas without interfering with or using personal data,” he added.

He said field operations were also supported by volunteers, with nearly 30,000 volunteers from 45 agencies across 14 states participating in more than 1,000 disaster relief missions over the past 10 months.

“We adhere to the two Cs: communication and coordination, with the two Cs meaning information must be conveyed clearly and on time.

“Actions must also be coordinated so that the people know what needs to be done, the committee knows how to provide assistance and agencies can act without delay.. this is the shift I want to see resulting from this National Preparedness Month,” he added. – Bernama

Yang turut hadir, Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad; Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim; Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Perak, Datuk Seri Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid dan Ketua Pengarah Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara (NADMA), Datuk Meor Ismail Meor Akim.

– UTUSAN

RM260 juta perkukuh kesiapsiagaan bencana negara

Yang turut hadir, Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad; Setiausaha Kerajaan Negeri, Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim; Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Perak, Datuk Seri Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid dan Ketua Pengarah Agensi Pengurusan Bencana Negara (NADMA), Datuk Meor Ismail Meor Akim.

“Sasarannya banyak tetapi tiada kemampuan kewangan.

– UTUSAN

Budget 2027: Nadma to use RM260m allocation for disaster relief centres, equipment, says Zahid

IPOH, Oct 11 — The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) will prioritise the RM260 million allocated under Budget 2027 for establishing more Permanent Disaster Relief Centres (PPKBs) and procuring disaster preparedness assets and equipment, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The deputy prime minister said the move would enable Nadma to assist frontline agencies in enhancing their operational capabilities, particularly in dealing with disasters such as floods.

“We want to establish two permanent disaster relief centres in each state. Insya-Allah, with the additional allocation next year, we will add more according to requirements,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also National Disaster Management Committee chairman, said this at a press conference after launching the 2026 National Preparedness Month (BKN) at the Ipoh Convention Centre here today.

He said the target of establishing two PPKBs in each state would focus on hotspot areas that frequently experience floods and require the evacuation of large numbers of victims.

On July 6, Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, representing the Rural and Regional Development Ministry, said during a Special Chamber session in the Dewan Rakyat that 15 PPKBs involving nine states were expected to begin operations in stages from this year as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s disaster management system.

Of the total, one PPKB each in Johor and Pahang has been fully completed, nine are under construction, while the remaining four are at the procurement and planning stages.

He said the rate of assistance for repairing homes affected by disasters had also been increased from RM5,000 to RM10,000 per family to help victims repair their homes and rebuild their lives after a disaster.

“In addition, aid management has also been improved, with Bantuan Wang Ihsan being distributed to victims while they are at Temporary Evacuation Centres, before they return to their respective homes, to expedite assistance to affected families,” he said. — Bernama

Haze: Malaysia still awaiting Indonesia’s response to firefighting aid offer – DPM Zahid

IPOH (Oct 11): Malaysia is still awaiting a response from Indonesia on its offer to help put out forest and land fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan that have caused transboundary haze, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said that during a visit to Jakarta last month, he had met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and a representative of the Vice-President to discuss the offer of assistance.

“The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Foreign Ministry have also written to their respective counterparts, but there has been no response yet.

“We take a positive view that perhaps they do not require our assistance. We remain optimistic and assume the best,” he told reporters after officiating the launch of National Preparedness Month (BKN) 2026 at the Ipoh Convention Centre here today.

In his speech, Ahmad Zahid, who is also chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee, said Malaysia had offered a firefighting aircraft, three helicopters and 52 officers and personnel to assist with firefighting operations in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, he said the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) not only assisted in managing disasters domestically but was also always ready to provide aid to other countries affected by disasters.

He said the team had also been deployed to Nepal to help locate 55 Malaysians who remained uncontactable following a disaster there, including by sending DNA samples to assist in the identification process.

“So far, we have not found any remains to be brought back to Malaysia. We are still waiting, and I would like to congratulate the SMART team,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid also expressed pride in SMART’s recognition as the second-best rescue team in Asia after Japan.

He said SMART had also retained its international Heavy Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) classification after undergoing a 36-hour assessment involving 173 criteria. – Bernama
