LJUBLJANA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia's Environmental Agency on Tuesday issued a red alert for heavy and prolonged rainfall across western, central, and southern regions from Tuesday evening until Thursday night.
The agency warned of possible torrential floods in the west, with rain spreading eastward on Wednesday and intensifying on Thursday. Forecasts indicate 50 to 120 millimeters of rainfall in most areas, with higher amounts locally.
Civil Protection and Disaster Relief chief Leon Behin urged residents in flood-prone areas to clear water paths and take precautions. The storm system is linked to a cyclone over the northern Mediterranean.
In recent years, Slovenia has faced worsening extreme weather, including record floods in August 2023 that killed six people and damaged more than 10,000 buildings.
