KOTA BARU: All 342 fire and rescue stations nationwide have been instructed to be on standby for the southwest monsoon transition.
Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad said the directive was issued following recent flash floods in Selangor, Johor and Sabah.
"The country is currently experiencing the transition to the southwest monsoon, and we expect more extreme weather conditions.
"The current weather patterns, including flash floods, were anticipated. Therefore, I have instructed all fire and rescue stations nationwide to be prepared," he said.
Nor Hisham was speaking to reporters after attending the Excellent Service Award ceremony at the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department headquarters here today.
Firefighters have also been instructed to continue monitoring flood-prone areas nationwide, he said.
Nor Hisham said the department had identified 1,181 personnel nationwide as obese, while another 229 were found to have various health issues.
He said the individuals were identified through wellness programmes conducted since last year, which included body mass index (BMI) screenings.
"Of the 1,410 personnel who took part in the programme, more than 300 successfully reached the targeted BMI range.
"The department has more than 14,000 personnel nationwide, and 23 per cent of them fall under the obese and health-risk category.
"Following the programme, 306 personnel managed to meet the required BMI standards," he said.
