Putra Heights victims to be briefed on rebuilding on Monday

PETALING JAYA:

The Selangor government will brief the victims of the Putra Heights gas pipeline blaze on the rebuilding of their homes on Monday, says menteri besar Amirudin Shari.

He said this will be among the tasks of a recovery committee formed to oversee efforts to rebuild homes and public infrastructure affected by the fire.

He said the panel will also manage the funds and assistance for the victims.

“This morning marked the last meeting of our disaster management committee for the gas pipeline explosion.

“On Monday, residents whose houses were completely and partially destroyed will be briefed on the rental assistance programme and guidelines for the reconstruction and repair of affected houses,” Amirudin said in a statement.

He said the state government will stop its daily press briefings. Instead, these will be held periodically to update the public on latest developments.

Amirudin said that as of this morning, 87 families had opted to relocate to rental homes and Airbnb units provided by the state government. Another 16 families were still looking for houses more convenient for their work or for their children’s studies.

The gas pipeline fire that broke out at about 8.10am on April 1 sent flames more than 30m into the sky, with temperatures soaring to 1,000 degree Celsius. It took nearly eight hours for the blaze to be extinguished.

The blaze left 81 houses destroyed, another 81 houses partially destroyed, 57 damaged but not burned, and 218 houses unaffected.
