No respite as Putra Heights pipeline fire victims face floods

Residents of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru and Kampung Tengah, who are still reeling from the April 1 gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, were hit by floods yesterday morning.

Heavy rain that started early yesterday forced residents in both villages to be moved again to the temporary relief centre at Masjid Putra Heights.

Mohd Kamalzaman Pauzi, 39, said his house, located less than 100 metres from the river in Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, got flooded around 6am, forcing him, his wife and their three young children to be evacuated to the relief centre.

“The river water began to rise around 4.20am, but we only moved out of our home when the situation worsened.

“We have moved back here (to the relief centre) within a week. I haven’t even had time to get over the fire and now we have been hit by floods,” he said.

Kamalzaman said since moving to the rented house five years ago, they have been hit by floods three times. The worst ones were in December 2022 and March 2023.

“Both times, we had to move to higher ground near the tahfiz. “We had to use ropes to get across because of the river’s strong currents,” he said.

Kamalzaman added that this time, he could only watch helplessly as rainwater poured into the house as the roof, which was damaged by the gas pipeline fire, had yet to be repaired.

“The roof over our kitchen area was affected by the fire, so all the items there get drenched whenever it rains,” said the burger seller.
