Sabah boosts disaster preparedness amid gas and earthquake risks

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department is intensifying its disaster preparedness efforts to address potential large-scale emergencies in the state.

Director Mohd Pisar Aziz said the department is committed to boosting response capabilities by fostering inter-agency cooperation, engaging communities, and conducting training tailored to Sabah's disaster risks.

His comments follow the recent Putra Heights Petronas gas pipeline explosion in Selangor, which caused widespread destruction, leaving homes in ruins and hundreds of residents requiring medical attention.

Mohd Pisar urged firefighters to remain vigilant, noting that many industries in Sabah rely on natural gas as fuel.

"We must stay alert and continuously update our knowledge and skills in facing unexpected situations, especially in light of the recent event in Selangor," he said.

"A similar situation could happen in Sabah, so we must take appropriate measures and precautions."

Adding to the urgency, Universiti Malaysia Sabah geologist Professor Dr Felix Tongkul recently warned of potential earthquakes of up to 6.5 magnitude in Sabah's districts of Ranau and Lahad Datu.
