SUBANG JAYA: A man and a group of foreigners saved two children who were trying to cross a river to reach safety following the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights.
Ahmad Syawal Hassan, 39, said today that he heard faint cries for help and jumped into the river to rescue them.
Syawal, from Kampung Sri Aman here, said it was about 8.15am yesterday when he noticed the children and their family members crossing the river.
"They were trying to avoid the extreme heat. "The children were screaming for help and looked like they were about to drown."
"More people were trying to cross the river at the time. Some had suffered burns. We helped them all get to safety."
Amir Nawab, 48, one of the Pakistani men, said their goal was to save those who were having trouble crossing the river.
"We saw that people were calling for help. When we reached the scene, one of my friends jumped into the river."
He said they saw children struggling in the river and feared they might be swept away by the current.
Another member of the group, Jaaffar Ali, 48, said: "I saw people who needed help and just acted. I'm thankful they were all saved."
Videos of the incident have gone viral.
