KUALA LUMPUR: The people of quake-hit Myanmar have flooded the comments section of a Facebook post by the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) to thank the Malaysian government for sending the specialist rescue unit.
A 50-member Smart team has been deployed to Myanmar after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake rocked the country late on Friday, just two days before the major holiday of Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia.
Myanmar nationals expressed gratitude to the Malaysian government for sending the Smart team and for the team's efforts working through Hari Raya.
The Facebook post detailed that the team managed to recover two bodies under the rubble during a nine-hour operation from 9am to 6pm yesterday.
Facebook user Thomas KD commented on the post saying "Thank you so much for coming to Myanmar to help, instead of celebrating Hari Raya with your family. May God bless you and your entire family."
While most comments were positive, a number of them were worried that the military junta in control of Myanmar would disrupt the efficiency of the operations.
"We are grateful for the humanitarian aid for Myanmar's earthquake victims. However, since the recipient on Myanmar's side is the military junta, we are deeply concerned that the aid will not effectively reach the people who are truly in need," user Thi Ha Naing Zaw said.
Another user Hsu May Nwe said: "So much appreciation. How kind of them. Shame about our military, we also worry about the safety of all of you."
About 2,000 people have so far been reported dead following Friday's earthquake.
To date, China, India, the United States, Vietnam, South Korea, Thailand, Russia, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, the Philippines and Taiwan.
