Toddler, elderly among those rescued in Melaka flash flood

MELAKA: A one-year-old toddler and an 85-year-old grandmother were among several people rescued from their homes after flash floods struck various parts of the state.

Heavy rainfall since the early hours of Thursday (March 6) led to severe flooding across two districts, submerging multiple areas.

The baby boy and his 41-year-old mother were rescued from their home at Lorong Pandan in Taman Kesidang, while the elderly woman was rushed to Melaka Hospital from her residence in Semabok, here.

A Melaka Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson reported that a couple in their 50s was also rescued from their home in Pengkalan Rama Pantai on Thursday morning.

 

"We also rescued a 58-year-old man from Merlimau," the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, the Melaka Civil Defence Force confirmed that evacuation centres have been established at SMK Dang Wangi Anum in Jasin district, SJK(C) Malim and SK Seri Duyong in Melaka Tengah district. Evacuee registration is currently underway.

Jalan Ong Kim Wee, Kampung Pengkalan Rama Pantai, Banda Kaba, Taman Desa Duyong, Jalan Munshi Abdullah, Lebuh Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin (AMJ) in Cheng, and Kampung Chetti were among the affected areas.

In Jasin, Kampung Kilang Berapi has also been inundated due to continuous heavy rainfall.
