KUALA LUMPUR: After more than a decade of efforts, SJK (C) Lee Min has received official approval from the Education Ministry to relocate from Kampung Telok Gong to Bandar Bestari, Klang.
At a press conference following the announcement today, the School Relocation Committee chairman Datuk Seri Jason Lee said the first phase of construction for the new school building would cost RM18 million.
He urged the public, prominent political and corporate figures, and major organisations to support the school's construction.
"In Klang, the other 21 Chinese primary schools are already well-established. Only Lee Min requires relocation, and with high construction costs, a significant amount of funding is needed. We hope everyone can contribute generously to support our project," he said.
Lee also expressed gratitude to the ministry for approving the relocation application after 11 years of submissions.
Established in 1944, the school has faced increasing challenges in recent years, including heavy vehicle traffic, worsening pollution, and frequent flooding, all of which have severely impacted the learning environment.
In 2021, the school experienced its worst flood in history, damaging teaching materials and disrupting classes.
A total of 16 flood incidents were recorded in 2022, followed by 10 incidents in 2023 and 18 incidents in 2024, making relocation an urgent necessity.
To lead the relocation initiative, Lee was asked to help by the school's Board of Governors, Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG), and Alumni Association.
In 2023, investigations by the Selangor Department of Irrigation and Drainage confirmed that the current school site is flood-prone.
Following this, the school got approval from the Selangor Chief Minister for a new site in Bandar Bestari, and final approval from the Education Ministry was granted on Nov 26, in 2024, with the school receiving official notification on Feb 5, this year.
