MIRI (Feb 16): Local residents joined hands in a large-scale ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) today to restore flood-hit neighbourhoods and also to support each other.
Multiple clean-up works were carried out across the city as part of the ongoing post-flood recovery efforts.
Volunteers, local authorities, and corporate partners worked together to clear debris and restore the flood-affected areas.
The initiative, under the ‘Miri Community Gotong-Royong Cleaning Up’ programme led by Miri City Council (MCC) and Miri Division Disaster Management Committee (MDDMC), took place across five major zones: Lutong, Tudan, Permyjaya, Pujut and RPR Batu 6.
The programme involved the collaboration of local government agencies, emergency response teams, and community volunteers with various agencies providing logistical support, equipment and manpower.
Volunteers removed debris, sorted waste, and disposed of flood-damaged items, while those representing the local agencies helped out in clearing the roads, drains, and other affected public spaces.
Fogging and disinfection operations were conducted over many public spaces, residential areas, and roadsides, ensuring that health risks would be minimised in the aftermath of the flooding.
As state Transport Minister and minister in-charge of the MDDMC, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin had stated, public participation was vital in sustaining flood prevention measures.
“Keeping our surroundings safe and clean is a shared responsibility,” he added during his appearance at Kampung Pangkalan Lutong today.
Mayor Adam Yii also took part in the programme, visiting the Pujut sub-zones as well as RPR Batu 6 here.
