Kg Hulu Serian JKKK initiates gotong-royong clean-up after severe floods

SERIAN (Feb 6): The Kampung Hulu Serian village security and development committee (JKKK) has organised a post-flood gotong-royong at several affected locations.

It was held in collaboration with the Surau Darul Taqwa Management Committee, Neighbourhood Watch, Gerakan Komuniti, GiatMara Serian, and residents.

Kampung Hulu Serian village chief Morshidi Loncheng said the cleanup focussed on Surau Darul Taqwa, Kampung Hulu Multipurpose Hall, and riverbank areas.

“The activities involved clearing debris and removing driftwood brought in by floodwaters,” he said in a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

Kampung Hulu Serian was among the worst-hit areas where flooding forced residents to evacuate to several temporary evacuation centres (PPS), such as Dewan Masyarakat Serian, Dewan Gelanggang Futsal Tertutup, and Dewan Tai Pak Kung.

These centres opened on Jan 29 and officially closed on Tuesday after conditions improved.

Morshidi thanked agencies involved in assisting flood victims, including the Serian District Disaster Management Committee, Welfare Department, Civil Defence Force, Fire and Rescue Department, police, Malaysian Armed Forces, People’s Volunteer Corps, and various non-governmental organisations.

Among those present to assist with the cleanup efforts was Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, along with neighbouring village chiefs, who provided support to the affected residents.
