KAPIT (Feb 3): The Song District Disaster Management Committee detected cracks on part of the road surface of Jalan Song-Simpang Temalat yesterday.
Song District Officer Harry Bruce Edwin said the section is located at the Jalan Kem Kayu Balak-Temalat intersection.
He said the authorities have cordoned off the area and erected warning signs due to the possibility of landslides.
Harry also advised road users travelling on Jalan Song-Temalat-Kanowit to proceed with caution, particularly at a stretch that partially collapsed following a landslide on Jan 30.
He said following the incident, the committee immediately mobilised machinery from the Public Works Department (JKR) to construct a temporary access link road to enable vehicles from both directions to pass through.
Jalan Kapit-Song-Ngemah-Kanowit is the only road linking Kapit to the rest of Sarawak.
“Road users must be very careful when approaching the stretch of road where the landslide occurred at Jalan Song-Temalat-Kanowit and also at Jalan Song-Simpang Temalat.
“Road users are reminded to drive very carefully and follow the road signage,” he advised.
Separately, Harry said the committee is also monitoring the high river level very closely.
“So far no one has been evacuated. The situation is under control. I thank all agencies involved – police, APM (Civil Defence Force), Rela (People’s Volunteer Corps), Bomba (Fire and Rescue Department), Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB), Welfare Department – for working very closely during this wet season,” he added.
In case of emergencies, he asked the public to contact 084-777221.
