SECOND WAVE HITS TERENGGANU, KELANTAN

THE second wave of floods has begun in Terengganu and Kelantan, with 28 temporary relief centres (PPS) opened in the two states. In Terengganu’s Kemaman and Dungun districts, flood evacuees rose to 4,904 at press time.

According to the Terengganu Disaster Management Committee Secretariat, 27 PPS were opened in the two districts, accommodating 1,181 families. Kemaman had the most evacuees at 4,608 victims sheltering in 20 PPS, while Dungun had 296 victims sheltering at seven PPS.

Data from the InfoBanjir website showed that Sungai Kemaman’s water level at the Air Putih Bridge was at 14.08m, surpassing the danger mark of 14m.

Three rivers were at the warning level. Sungai Nerus in Kampung Langkap, Setiu, was at 20.11m and Sungai Dungun in Kuala Jengal was at 20.2m, both above the danger level of 20m.

Sungai Tumpat in Kampung Baru Kemasik was at 2.49m, above the danger level of 1.9m.

Eight rivers are at the alert level: Sungai Dungun at the Dungun Bridge (10.45m), Sungai Dungun in Kampung Pasir Raja (37.22m), Sungai Telemong in Kuala Ping, Hulu Terengganu (17.76m), Sungai Kemaman at the Paya Paman Pump House (3.42m), the main drain in Padang Kemunting, Kuala Nerus (3.62m), Sungai Terengganu at the Pulau Bahagia Pump House in Kuala Terengganu (2.11m), Sungai Nerus in Kampung Bukit, Setiu (11.17m) and Sungai Tersat in Kampung Sekayu, Hulu Terengganu (19.22m).

In Gua Musang, Bernama reported that residents were urged to remain vigilant and evacuate to the nearest PPS if their area was flooded.

Gua Musang Disaster Operations Control Centre chairman Nik Raisnan Daud said the warning was issued due to the rising water levels of several major rivers in the area following heavy rainfall since Monday.

“We have observed an upward trend in the water levels of rivers in Gua Musang.

“If the rain continues throughout this evening (yesterday), more areas may get flooded. “Disaster management agencies, including the police and Fire and Rescue Department, are on standby to help with evacuations at any moment.”

Gua Musang police chief Superintendent Sik Choon Foo said besides interior villages, several areas near Gua Musang town had begun to flood yesterday morning.

“Among the affected areas are Jalan Kampung Pulai, Felda Aring 2, Felda Chiku 2, Jalan Bandar Gua Musang, Kampung Batu 5 and Batu 6.

“Roads in these areas are beginning to flood. “Residents are urged to exercise caution and follow the authorities’ instructions if they are ordered to evacuate to PPS.

“They are advised to bring essential documents, such as their identity cards.” Sik urged parents to closely monitor their children, particularly

when water levels rise in their neighbourhoods, to ensure their safety and prevent unfortunate incidents. The Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal showed that one PPS was opened in Gua Musang.

Dewan Semai Bakti Felda Chiku 7 is accommodating 125 people from 30 families.
