No rain but cloud seeding may cool things down for a few days in northern states

PETALING JAYA: The damp air resulting from cloud seeding operations carried out in the northern states will bring the mercury down a few notches and offer respite from the hot weather in the northern states, says the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

It said the cooling effect is expected to last about one to three days.

It added that while the cloud seeding operations on Feb 27 and 28 above water catchment areas (WCA) of Bukit Merah in Perak, Air Itam and Teluk Bahang dams in Penang yielded no rainfall in all the three WCAs, there was rainfall in Taiping (0.7mm) and Kerian (0.5mm).

"Strong winds at 1,524m (5,000ft) could have created rain clouds away from the planned location," it said in a statement on Friday (March 1).

MetMalaysia said the cloud seeding operation in all three areas was aimed at increasing the water capacity of the dams.

"MetMalaysia has given advice and technical expertise for the cloud seeding operations carried out by the National Disaster Agency and RMAF on Feb 27 and 28," it added.
