JOHOR BARU: The post-flood cleanup across Johor is progressing well, with 315.74 tonnes of waste from affected areas cleared as of March 25.
The figure is expected to climb to 500 tonnes as efforts continue.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Mohd Shukor said nearly 1,000 workers have been mobilised to speed up the process, ensuring affected communities can recovered quickly.
"Local authorities have played a crucial role in this operation, including Johor Baru City Council (MBJB), Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP), Pasir Gudang Municipal Council (MBPG), and the district councils in Kota Tinggi, Segamat and Kulai," he said in a statement today.
The cleanup involves 144 roll-on roll-off (RORO) bins, 11 open tipper trucks, and 31 excavators — designed for digging, excavation, and earth-moving tasks — to expedite debris removal.
While thanking government agencies, local councils, and volunteers for their efforts, Jafni acknowledged logistical challenges.
However, he gave his assurances that coordination would be improved to manage flood waste more efficiently.
The state government is also planning long-term flood mitigation measures, including upgrading drainage infrastructure and conducting engineering studies to identify vulnerabilities, he said.
"Talks with the federal government for additional funding on large-scale flood mitigation projects are also underway.
"Residents are urged to cooperate with local authorities by reporting areas still in need of cleanup. "Together, we will rebuild stronger communities," said Jafni.
