JOHOR BARU: Pulai member of parliament Suhaizan Kaiat has called on the Johor government to provide additional assistance to flood victims who have suffered complete losses, with some facing damages of up to RM20,000.
He said the RM3,000 aid announced by Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi was helpful but insufficient for those who lost everything, including vehicles and household assets.
Earlier, Suhaizan visited and distributed aid to 15 community leaders representing flood-affected households.
"The residents of Taman Tampoi Indah and Taman Tampoi Utama never expected flooding in their area. Many had no time to save their valuables or vehicles.
"The state government should consider a special relief fund for these victims, as their financial burden is far greater than those with minimal damage," Suhaizan said during a breaking-fast event with Johor Pakatan Harapan and media representatives last night.
The Johor government allocated over RM11 million in monsoon flood relief, with RM3,000 payments set to be distributed before Hari Raya Aidilfitri to 3,749 households registered at evacuation centres.
However, Suhaizan said that many flood victims in the worst-hit residential areas lacked home insurance, leaving them with no financial safety net.
"These families lost everything in an instant. A one-off RM3,000 assistance is inadequate. The state should determine a reasonable additional sum to help them rebuild their lives," he said.
